The Fortress is closed in by high rising stone walls, today found partly in ruins; yet still retaining two stone sentries on its more prominent angles facing the city and on its bay side lies a turret, which until recently held the Portuguese flag from its days of grandeur.The São Sebastião Pousada is found in the historical centre of Angra do Heroísmo, a city that was classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
The city of Angra do Heroísmo was the first settlement of Açores elevated to status of city in 1534, having been a maritime harbour of great importance from the fifteenth century through to the nineteenth.
